The COVID-19 pandemic has put the world on standstill — most countries are on lockdown and travel bans have been implemented everywhere. Businesses all over the globe have been directly affected by this crisis, and new business norms are put into place while quarantine is being implemented. Companies are adhering to government guidelines on social distancing to their offices which suggests that workspace densities will have to be reduced by at least 50%. This forces companies to shift to remote work or work-from-home setup.

While working from home allows more flexibility and can increase productivity, it can also introduce a lot of challenges; these may include finding a comfortable workstation, communicating effectively with teammates and bosses, and even experiencing sadness or anxiety. As we navigate this new reality, here are some strategies to guide you while working from home.

Keep a regular work schedule and set healthy boundaries

Be sure that you work reasonable hours, and respect working hours boundaries for yourself and your colleagues. It can be challenging to wrap up your workday because of the lack of distinction between your home and office, but establishing a routine that eases you into family mode will help with the transition.

Hacks to work from home

Create your home office

Clean up a quiet and peaceful place in your house to be your designated workplace. Set up a comfortable chair, and make sure that your corner is well lit. Another tip to secure a conducive working environment is by communicating your expectations with anyone who will be home with you. Of course, you may be working from home, but it is natural to have “company.” Make sure they respect your space during work hours.

Exercise and stay active

Get up and move regularly to reduce and alleviate stress. Be careful not to sit for prolonged periods of time. Set a timer to remind you that it is time to move.

Stay informed but limit social media consumption

Set a time to keep updated through authorized resources, but avoid continuous exposure that may trigger stress or anxiety. You can use applications on your phone to help you to reduce your time spent browsing on different social media platforms.

Get creative to stay connected

Encourage group catch ups or hangouts. Regular coffee chats may be used as a venue to address work-related questions, or even personal and work from home issues. These can also keep things interesting, and can help maintain motivation and engagement within the group.

Despite these difficult times, have a positive mindset and maintain a clear headspace. Look for the upside in every situation, and focus on things you can control. Make working from home work for you.
